Position: Woonasquatucket River Greenway - Junior River Ranger

The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) is seeking 4 highly motivated individuals who live near the Woonasquatucket River Greenway in Providence or Johnston to join our Ranger team for 22 weeks this spring and summer. Junior Rangers will report to our Greenway Manager and two skilled Senior Rangers and assist with maintenance of the parks and bike path along Woonasquatucket River Greenway.

Rangers work 21 hours a week for 22 weeks spanning from the beginning of April to the middle of September. Daily tasks may include mowing, weed whacking, brush cutting, spot weeding, mulching, picking up litter, watering plants, sweeping, raking, river clean ups, tree pruning, fence repair, working with volunteers, and graffiti removal. River Rangers are stewards of greenway and are responsible for greeting people in the community and encouraging appropriate use of the outdoor space.

At the conclusion of the 22 week program, the WRWC may keep two exceptional Rangers on for an additional two months of work.

Required Qualifications:

  • Be between 18 and 24 years old;
  • Be highly motivated and comfortable working with a diverse group of people;
  • Be able to work in the heat, doing hard, manual labor;
  • Complete the 2 page Jr. River Ranger Application (click here for application).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Live in a neighborhood along the Greenway, such as Valley, Olneyville, Harford, Smith Hill, and Johnston.

Compensation: $9.60 per hour, 21 hours per week. Applicants with proven landscaping experience may be eligible for a higher pay rate.

The Woonasquatucket River Greenway is a 7-mile bike path that follows the river on-road and off-road from Providence to Johnston. The WRWC has worked to restore three urban parks along the Greenway - Merino Park, Donigian Park and Riverside Park. The River Ranger team will work with the Police Department, Providence and Johnston Parks Department, the Providence Housing Authority, local organizations, businesses, churches, recreation centers, and community members to revitalize the parks, maintain the bike path, and educate and empower the watershed community.
