After Work Paddle on the Lower Woonasquatucket :: September 7, 2010 :: 5:30pm

Location: Lower Woonasquatucket River

Join us for an after work paddle on the lower Woonasquatucket and see the city from a new angle! We will start at the landing on South Water Street and paddle up the Woonasquatucket River to near Eagle Street before turning around and heading back down to South Water Street. This trip will give you a new perspective on the city as we paddle past some of the mills that built this city as well as through Waterplace Park and past downtown Providence. While this is definitely an urban river, we have seen red-tailed hawks, great blue herons, Peregrine Falcons, and many other birds in this stretch of the river. The complete round trip is about 4 miles. Children are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

The river in this area is generally smooth and quiet, which makes for easy paddling. We have some canoes and kayaks available so you don't need your own, but if you have your own you are welcome to bring it. If you are bringing your own canoe or kayak please remember to bring wearable life jackets for everyone who will be in the boat.

Every boat on this trip also needs to have a flashlight on board because we will not finish the paddle until a little after sunset and flashlights are then required by Coast Guard regulations.

Price: $20/person if you are using one of our boats, $5/person if you are bringing your own boat.

Call or email Bruce at the Watershed Council at bhooke@woonasquatucket.org or (401) 351-5747 to sign up. Advance sign-up is required so that we can determine how many boats we need and keep the trip from getting too large.

When registering, please provide the following information:

  1. Whether you will be using one of our boats or bringing your own. If you will be using one of our boats please note whether you prefer a canoe or a kayak. The canoes hold two (or three in some cases) people, the kayaks are all solo kayaks.

  2. The names of all of the people you are registering for this event.

  3. A phone number, ideally one that we can reach you at on the day of the paddle in case of last minute issues such as weather-related changes.

  4. If you have one, an email address that we can use to send you directions and related information. If you do not have an email address please provide a U.S. Mail address and we will mail you the directions.

Evening Paddle on Greystone Mill Pond :: September 16, 2010 :: 5:30pm

Greystone Mill Pond, on the border of Johnston, North Providence and Smithfield, is a narrow, winding pond with many twists and turns, and wetlands along the way. We will put in at Cricket Park in Johnston and paddle up the pond for about 5/8 mile and then turn around and paddle back to the starting point. We often see ducks, herons and other birds on this paddle. Greystone Pond almost always is a lovely, peaceful place to paddle!

The river in this area is generally smooth and quiet, which makes for easy paddling. Children are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

We have some canoes and kayaks available so you don't need your own, but if you have your own you are welcome to bring it. If you are bringing your own canoe or kayak please remember to bring wearable life jackets for everyone who will be in the boat.

Every boat on this trip also needs to have a flashlight on board because we may not finish the paddle until a little after sunset and flashlights are then required by state regulations.

Price: $20/person if you are using one of our boats, $5/person if you are bringing your own boat.
