Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council Honored by the Narragansett Bay Commission with a 2008 Environmental Merit Award

The Narragansett Bay Commission (NBC) awarded the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council with a 2008 Environmental Merit Award, presented at an NBC board meeting on March 11, 2009. Following are the remarks made by Raymond J. Marshall, PE, Executive Director of the Narragansett Bay Commission:

[The] Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council is being recognized for their strong and continuous environmental leadership role in improving the environmental quality of the Woonasquatucket River in an effort to restore this historic waterway as a public recreational resource. The 18-mile-long Woonasquatucket River flows through six cities and towns in Rhode Island including Glocester, North Smithfield, Smithfield, Johnston, North Providence and Providence, where it flows into the Providence River and out into Narragansett Bay. A few of the many activities and achievements of this organization include:

  • Acting as a long time working partner with the NBC on the NBC Annual Earth Day River Restoration Events
  • Continued work with local, state and federal partners to move forward with riparian buffer restorations
  • Assisting various state and federal agencies with the development of a "Watershed Action Plan" to promote on-the-ground projects that advance the revitalization of the River and its watershed
  • Completion of a Woonasquatucket River Greenway in Providence and Johnston.
  • And the WRWC has been an active stakeholder in the NBC COS Abatement Project.
